Leather jackets are not usually waterproof (unless stated as such) and so their use is best kept for summer riding. Most leather jackets are supplied with shoulder and elbow armour, and usually back armour too.
It's important that your jacket fits you comfortably and allows you to move without any untoward restriction. However, remember that a leather jacket shouldn't be baggy, and the leather will 'stretch' somewhat over time.
