What are your thoughts on the ‘Moped Cars’ for 16 year olds?

So from the 19th January when the new Moped Law is introduced, 16 year olds will soon be able to drive around in a car just like the rest of us on the roads; after only having to pass a standard CBT – scary thought isn’t it!

Technically, the new Aixam GTO isn’t a car, but a ‘light quadricycle’ that is only limited to go at the maximum speed of 28mph (45km/h). Sounds slightly better now doesn’t it.

This new piece of machinery, which looks and drives exactly like a car, is already extremely popular in many European Countries. However, there have been a few concerns raised from road safety groups, that 16 years old will be able to drive these cars on a moped license – when of course the two vehicles are very different.

A handful of young adults have been able to test drive these cars, and the results have been extremely positive. Easy to pick up, great to look at, and handy as there are two seats inside the car have been mentioned on numerous occasions. Aixam Mega Ltd introduced their cars officially to the UK during this years Motorcycle Live at the NEC, with all the young teenagers wanting to catch a glimpse of their first car! The one big downside however, the car retails at new £9,999. Wow. Pricey.

Therefore, while they may not be for everyone, the handful of 16 year olds who may be able to afford this Aixam GTO will certainly take advantage I’m sure!
