The 2017 Suzuki GSX-R 1000 L7 is the culmination of years of GSX-R development on and off the track. Since returning to MotoGP in 2015, Suzuki have worked with the world’s top racers to bring the latest racing technology to the road. As a result, this remarkable new bike is much lighter, more compact, more aerodynamic, better handling and more powerful than ever before.
This bike is at the pinnacle of the GSX-R sport bike range, with its focus is on riders who want the very best performance and the ultimate exciting ride. Suzuki have pioneered their Broad Power System in this new model: a combination of cutting-edge engine technology and exhaust adjustments that ensures maximum power at all engine speeds. It starts with Suzuki Top Feed Injectors which operate at a higher RPM. This S-TFI system feeds the engine more efficiently than the previous model, increasing top end power to a huge 199.2bhp.
The second component is the race-developed VVT, which optimises valve timing. The valve train itself has been changed from the previous model to a track-proven ‘finger follower’ rocker arm system. These features combine to improve valve control and increase peak output – without sacrificing low and mid-range power.
Finally, the Suzuki Exhaust Tuning Alpha system finishes off the Broad Power System with butterfly valves in each header balance tube. These valves are controlled by a servo motor – they stay closed to enhance power at low and mid rpm, then open to add extra power at high rpm.
The new GSX-R1000 gets going faster with Suzuki's one-touch Easy Start System. When starting in neutral, there's no need to pull the clutch in and hold the starter button down - it's just a simple touch to get going. Low RPM Assist monitors and adjusts engine speed when moving off from a standstill or manoeuvring at low speeds.
It’s not all about the engine – the 2017 GSX-R 1000 is lighter than previous models with just 202kg kerb weight. This makes handling sharper and more responsive than ever before. Handling is also improved by cutting-edge Showa suspension technology designed for racing.
Showa BPF (Big Piston Forks) offer better compression damping, even when braking hard on track. The new suspension soaks up small bumps with ease and has adjustable compression damping, reload damping and spring preload. The front forks team up with an adjustable Showa rear shock, for all-round superior performance.
Braking is reliable and strong with new, larger Brembo brake discs. These pair with top-of-the-range Brembo monobloc brake calipers. Suzuki's new Motion Track Brake system is the latest in ABS technology, using sensors all over the bike to optimise braking. This reduces rear wheel lift during hard braking, makes downhill braking easier and even helps with stability when cornering.
Tackle any conditions on the track or on the road with the new GSX-R. The Suzuki Drive Mode Selector has three power modes to handle straight roads or twisty tracks. Suzuki’s advanced traction control has 10 levels to suit road conditions, personal preference and experience level. The traction control can be changed while riding, when the throttle is closed.
The new GSX-R 1000’s sharp appearance is enhanced by new LED headlights, position lights, tail lights and indicators. The LED headlight is lighter than the previous model, reducing overall bike weight. It also has a more compact design, creating a slick new profile on the nose of the new GSX-R.
